Axess Opens for Course Enrollment on September 1
It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: signing up for your first quarter of classes at Stanford! Before you get too excited about enrolling immediately, however, you should take steps to plan out your course schedule that will save you time later on.
- Step 1: Consult the EE Graduate Handbook.
-
Students who intend to earn the MS degree should read the section entitled Program Planning: M.S. Degree. Students entering the PhD program should be aware that the EE department recently made changes to the PhD course unit requirements. If you have questions about requirements, please save them for when you arrive on campus, as we will address these matters in detail during orientation.
- Step 2: Browse/search the list of available courses
-
ExploreCourses (2022–2023 will be available on August 17). Click on Electrical Engineering (EE) under School of Engineering to view courses in the department, or use the search bar at the top to search for courses containing keywords. You can view classes offered during Autumn quarter by using the “term offered” filters on the right.
- Step 3: Consult your academic program advisor
-
Advisor assignments will be distributed to MS students during the week of September 9.
If you received an initial academic advisor in your acceptance letter, you may contact this faculty member with course enrollment questions. Otherwise, you may draft a preliminary study list that can be confirmed by your advisor once you receive your assignment. You may enroll in courses before speaking with your advisor.
- Step 4:
-
Read the Patent and Copyright Agreement. After August 19, sign the Patent and Copyright Agreement for Personnel at Stanford (SU-18). Complete any remaining items on your To Do List in Axess.
- After completing these steps, you’re ready to enroll!*

-
Visit the Axess Help Center for detailed instructions on how to enroll in courses. Don’t worry if you can’t enroll immediately—students do not typically have problems with graduate courses filling up. Full-time graduate students should be enrolled in 8–10 units by September 14.
*International students must arrive on campus and attend the Maintaining Your Legal Status session before they will be able to enroll. Please see the Bechtel International Center's website for more information.
International Students: Obtaining Your Student Visa
Students entering the U.S. for the first time using the F-1/J-1 visa to study at Stanford University should refer to one of the following documents from the Bechtel International Center:
F-1 Graduate Information Sheet
J-1 Graduate Information Sheet
If more than 30 days have passed since your visa interview and your visa has not been issued, please send an email to new_intl_students@stanford.edu (link sends email) with the following information: full name, date of birth, citizenship, passport number, place & date of visa interview, and any information provided by the Consulate. Visa related questions should also be sent to the address noted above.
Note: The orientation for new international graduate students is scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8. More information to follow from the Bechtel International Center and on the International Student Orientation website.
